Winter of 2003 arrives in Utah!
For the last day or so a big cold front has been moving into Utah. As usual, we get a lot of wind and it becomes rather warm as the cold front pushes its way into the state. As of last night it had become quite cold, and the weather stations indicated their predictions of snow.

Last night, while I was in Park City having dinner with my wife, the first couple of snow flakes came down. This morning as I left the house it really was looking like winter. At lunch time … it arrived.

I’m now looking out the window at a steady snowfall as winter has arrived. We have snow before Halloween … and that is a good thing for those of us that enjoy being out on the slopes!

The transparent society gets closer … or a closeup?
There is a merging of technologies, and the evolution of technologies, that is creating the possiblity of every person becoming a “sensor” that can be used by others. With the Internet, 802.11 wireless, wearable computers, cell phones with cameras, and now embedded cameras … we’ll soon be able to share and broker audible and visual information from anywhere.

This article shows what HP engineers have been up to with embedded cameras in glasses. When coupled with a small computer that has recording capabilities, GPS, and wireless connectivity, we could all be sharing recorded information about almost anything that we experience. If you have not read David Brin’s The Transparent Society … you ought to. We’re getting closer and closer …

A New Idea for E-Paper
I was just talking with a friend about when E-Paper (ePaper?) is going to arrive. This article explains yet another possible way that we are going to see this occur. It involves oil and water, and a way to cause the water to be attracted and repelled by the individual pixels.

I’m not sure if I am as interested in this as a replacement for paper … which would be interesting … as much as for fashion, or other purposes. Imagine giving someone a gift wrapped in this paper! 😉

And the fire still burns …
The fire near my house is still burning and expanding. My house is in a place where the winds are not driving the smoke near us, so nights have been cool and clear for us. Coming to work is a major experience though.

Last night while coming home, I noticed that the fire is now high on the mountain … far above the lake and cities. According to the UtahFireInfo.gov web site, it is only 16% contained, and has burned 4,400 acres. Last night my wife and I were able to watch an entire ridge near the lake go up as a gaint bonfire. It was the one large area nearest to our house that had not burned yet. I drove down to the lake to watch, and there were lots of people with video cameras recording the entire event.

Fire … it still draws humans near, yet still causes fear. It is amazing to get to see something like this so close.

Wild Fire!
The last couple of nights have been pretty cool. There was a “Prescribed Fire” scheduled by the US Forest Service for the 22nd of September. The first stage was supposed to be 600 acres. Uh … it got a little out of control.

Tuesday night when I got home late, I was able to sit on my couch with my wife and watch the fire ~1.5 miles away on the mountain side across the lake. It was really impressive … and out of control. The news indicated that over 3000 acres had burned, and it was slightly out of control.

Then yesterday morning, working at SCO sucked due to the extreme amount of smoke – even inside the building – that was coming down Provo Canyon. This is actually good in a way since the smoke flowing down Provo Canyon is going away from my house!

Last night was another night of great views of the fire from my couch. And this morning, it seems to still be going strong. When I woke, I could see bursts of flames through the smoke. On the way to work, I could see that a lot of the fire had finished burning … at least low on the mountain. But when I got to Deer Creek Dam at the top of Provo Canyon, it became evident that the fire was still burning quite well up high on the mountain near Cascade Springs.

Now, being at work, I am again sitting in a smoke filled office. Even my truck smelled like smoke when I got in this morning. Watching from the couch with my wife was fun though. Even better than seeing a fire on CNN! 😉

Domains, Domain registrars and Internet property
I have to admit … I hate the Internet “tax” that comes in the form of “domain name registrations”. I remember when I experimented with my domain servers to add the Alternic name space to our servers. It’s amazing to me that with all of the “peer to peer” development going on around the net, that someone hasn’t come up with a good, distributed alternative …

My main purpose in bringing this up is that I “lost” some domain names by not paying in time. It’s an amazing process, and I had given up hope of recovering these names. As of today, I again own my WarBlading domains, and I have found that I “lost” my NoizCast domain.

In the future … I’ll be watching much more closely to ensure that I do not loose these again!

Regular Posting …
This morning, I thought it would be a good idea to just get back into the habit of regular posting. I’ve been creating lots of reasons on why I was going to wait … so now I’m going to be unreasonable. 😉

I worked all weekend on the building in Heber. Saturday was a good day getting ready for painting on Sunday. I completed painting the computer room ceiling, and also started to get all of the phone and CAT-5 wiring ready. It is amazing all of the finish work that starts to emerge the more that you complete!

Sunday was a day of painting … the second coat of the computer room walls, and a lot of touch-up around the building. Lastly, we painted the computer room floor.

The best part was having my son Sam there all weekend … he’s going to be one year old this next weekend! He was having a blast carrying around the various tools, and “assisting” me doing the work. I’ll have to post some pictures …

More wireless deployments …
I have been very busy lately on a number of fronts. Two of my key consulting clients are both going through huge changes … one of them is creating the potential to change the computer industry in a way that I would have never imagined. More on that later …

On the wireless front, 80211.net has continued to expand it’s services and offerings, and we are now providing service to several different types of customers. We recently added some more Internet Cafes, and have both apartment and residential users. With all of this, we are learning a lot about the management and administration of a wireless network.

One thing that occurred recently is that our wireless relay on the mountain here in Wasatch County failed. It appears that one or more of the wiring connections got loose, and the batteries didn’t get charged. Once they died, the shed went down … for days. It sucked.

I am now working on a solution to remotely monitor the shed, and it’s electrical system. I’ll write more in the future, however we are close to deploying a solution – tied into MRTG – that will allow us to monitor the temperature, humidity, light-level, airflow, battery voltage, charge current, and load current. I am also looking to provide alarming in this solution.

Besides just providing service … we are working no how to provide “manageable” service. And we are learning a lot in the process …

My father and his blogging …
While I have been spending all of my time lately doing everything *BUT* blogging, my father has now got some press about his blog. I set him up a year or so ago with his own place to express himself on the web … SamSaid!. I wanted to do this for him to have this place to publish, and also as an experiment to see how easy it is to blog. My father is not a heavy computer user and so he is a good “average user” for me to learn from.

Somehow he ran into someone in the local press where he lives that was intrigued by his blogging, and so they wrote this article about him. Very cool … my father is proof of the power of the blog, and that it is something that can be done by almost anyone!

Now it’s time for me to get back into the swing of blogging … I’ve been catching up on my reading … I want to start writing again!

The silence again …
It’s kind of wild … I haven’t felt like writing for a while. There are some many things going on in my life – and it’s a blast! I have a four month old son, Sam, who has added a whole new dimension to our family … and life in general. In addition to Sam, I am spreading myself thin as usual as I pursue several different projects in very interesting (to me) areas of technology. In one of my ventures, http://80211.net, we have been deploying a county-wide wireless network and learning a lot along the way. I’ll be writing more about that. In addition, I am still pursuing HumanXtensions and now on a more agressive pace. The new web-site is coming along well, and I’ll be glad when it is complete as it is both a much improved web-site while also being an interesting experiment with technolology. Lastly … my newest venture … is a unique system for distributing multimedia content. I’ll post more about that one also …

Anyhow … I’ll be posting more in the coming weeks!
