Sam and his language

I have posted far too little about my son Sam, and his progress and
development.  It is an amazing process to watch and be a part
of.  Lately, Sam has really taken off with grammer and
sentences.  They are crude, but he is learning to communicate
effectively.

I keep working with him on the pronunciation, there are still a lot of
letters that he leaves out.  It’s fun to have him come up and
start talking to me … he is so committed to telling me something, and
quite often I just don’t know what he is saying.  At the same
time, there are some things that he knows and says crystal clear.

Last night we were playing in the garage.  I hung some nylon
webbing from the ceiling, and I showed him how to grab it up high and
swing from it.  I then showed him how to sit in it and
swing.  It was interesting to watch him learning how to put the
loop behind his back to sit in it … he couldn’t quite get it each
time … but try and try again … he started to get the concept.
They he said “Daddy … you turn.  I sit.”  He wanted me to
get up off the steps, and go swing.  We switched places, and I
swung for a bit.  Then he said “Daddy … me turn.  You
sit.”  What a kick.

He knows that we are going to see the ocean … we’re due to leave for
Hawaii this Friday.  This will be his second trip … and I’m sure
a lot of fun!

Sam and Juice Boxes …

It was fun … about a week ago my son Sam showed that he knew how to
operate a Juice Box. These are the small juice-in-a-box products
that have a straw in a wrapper glued to the outside. He was able
to pull the straw off of the box, get it out of the wrapper, and then
stab it through the little foil spot on top of the box.

Tracy told me about it, and so the next day we watched as he did it
again with another one. It is amazing what he learns and
imitates. At my office in Heber City, I was working on some of my
computers when he found a floppy disk … I pointed at a floppy drive
on an old PC and showed him how to put it in. He had fun for 30+
minutes putting the floppy into almost every machine that he could
reach … put it in … eject it … put it in … eject.

Too bad that this skill of using floppy disks will not be one that he’ll ever know … they’ll soon be long gone!

Regular Posting …
This morning, I thought it would be a good idea to just get back into the habit of regular posting. I’ve been creating lots of reasons on why I was going to wait … so now I’m going to be unreasonable. 😉

I worked all weekend on the building in Heber. Saturday was a good day getting ready for painting on Sunday. I completed painting the computer room ceiling, and also started to get all of the phone and CAT-5 wiring ready. It is amazing all of the finish work that starts to emerge the more that you complete!

Sunday was a day of painting … the second coat of the computer room walls, and a lot of touch-up around the building. Lastly, we painted the computer room floor.

The best part was having my son Sam there all weekend … he’s going to be one year old this next weekend! He was having a blast carrying around the various tools, and “assisting” me doing the work. I’ll have to post some pictures …

Out of communication …
Wow … it’s been months since I spewed a single post! Way too long.

There are several excuses that I could create, however it just comes down to what I’ve been committed to lately. I have been on a push to finally complete the remodel of my building up in Heber City. I bought the place years ago … started the remodel to build out offices on two floors, and then the tech crash occurred. Things sat for a long time, and so about 6-8 months ago I chose to get it complete … and we are almost there. I’ve now completed the electrical and plumbing, we insulated and got the sheet rock done. After the taping and texture, a friend and I painted the entire place. As of yesterday, we got the finish electrical and plumbing complete. I’m down to a lot of finish painting, and then getting a couple of floors done. With all the other things to do in life, I figure we’ll get it complete before the end of September!

Outside of that, one of the companies that I was consulting to – Vultus – was acquired by The SCO Group. In the acquisition, I was asked to change from a part-time employee status to become a full-time employee. With everything that is going on, it was an interesting choice to make … however I chose the job with SCO.

Since joining SCO right around the first of June, we have taken on making a huge difference with the product groups at SCO. The lawsuits and legal issues are all with the “other” division of SCO – SCOSource – while we are now a part of the SCO products division. This organization has now gone through significant changes since we joined … new management … new vision … new strategies.

As the SCOx Chief Architect” I am now working with a great team of people to create a new abstraction layer above operating systems. I’ll post more about this as time progresses. The SCOx Application Substrate is what we are calling it, and it was announced last week at the SCO Forum in Las Vegas. It’s a cool concept that leverages all of the advances in operating systems, along with their bundling of common languages and services, and uses Web Services (SOAP) as the current common API. I was glad to see that the folks that invented UNIX were interested in exploring what comes next!

Outside of these two huge projects, I of course have been having an incredible time with my family and new son. Sam (named after my father and grandfather!) is almost one year old, and is growing like crazy! He’s now walking, and starting to learn words … it’s wild.

I actually am a little bummed that I haven’t been blogging more about him … and myself.

Seven weeks of development …
I continue to be amazed by the rapid evolutionary development of my son. Over this week, I realized that the awareness of the world is increasing. He is smiling and laughing … giggling … and starting to use his hands more and more. His legs are gaining strength and he just seems to be getting bigger and bigger. His sleep cycle is getting longer, and we’re seeing sometimes 4+ hours of sleep at a time. It’s a blast …

Internet Access Everywhere …
I have to get into the blogging mode again. It’s been so long that I’ writing about things after the fact … instead of during the events. In this case, it’s funny to write about last weekend … especially when I was staying in a remote southern Utah town where I was able to get Internet Access!

I went to Hankville, UT with some friends for a “Fusion Weekend” of hiking, scientific discussions, and general life reflection. It was a blast. We stayed at the Wispering Sands Motel, and the manager is also the ISP for the town of Hanksville. He has installed a 56kbps Frame-Relay link into the Qwest cloud … connected to XMission here in Salt Lake City. If you are curious about why we all went to Hanksville, you’ll have to go visit the Fusion Weekend link above … it’s where to stay if you want to explore Goblin Valley and some of the incredible Utah slot canyons.

Don, the manager, was so cool that he let me put my mobile 802.11b Access Point in the lobby of the motel and we were all able to get wireless Internet in our rooms. This really got me thinking about just how connected we are becoming. I’m going to be talking more with Don about our http://80211.net project … he might be assisting us with more locations in the south.

Lastly … our weekend trip was a fun family adventure. With the birth of my son Sam our truck had become quite crowded. In order to provide more space for luggage and the possibility of road trips, I picked up a camper shell for my truck so that the bed is now fully enclosed. It worked great. We did the drive and started to get the process of driving with a baby worked out. All of this is in preparation of our trip to Seattle for Thanksgiving. It’s going to be a fun trip!

The Birth of Samuel Curtis Lemon …
I’ve put together some pictures of my son’s birth. And also of the my parents first visit to see him. Samuel is named after my father and grandfather as a tribute to who they are in the world for me. One thing that I truly recognize is how my father has been committed to me all of my life, and how my grandfather was committed to him. Sam’s middle name is my middle name … so I do get a little bit of a link through his name.

Now I get to be committed to generating him in the world … and I look forward to the adventure!

Time gaps …
It’s funny how I have slipped from blogging from time to time. It seems that life just picks up and gets going at a pace that I just can’t keep up. Looking at my last post, I just can’t believe that it’s been that long. I’ve been keeping very busy the last several months … and of course that means that huge shifts have occurred.

I can’t believe it, but I just celebrated my one year wedding anniversary! Even with my wife Tracy being very pregnant, we had a great time close to home. We celebrated it in Salt Lake City … and talked about planning the next one to be somewhere very different. This special day was barely four weeks before the anticipated due date of our baby …

On the due date of our baby … the baby chose to arrive! Well … almost. He was actually born at 2:19am on the 13th of September … just hours into the next day. The last five+ weeks of my life have been amazing … what an experience. I just created a new category to post about my son – Samuel Curtis Lemon – and keep track of some of the amazing transformations that occur with him each day.

Anyhow … I am looking forward to getting back into the blogging … I’m starting to really have some fun with things …
