Welding

Note to self:  At some point it would be fun to learn how to weld.

This weekend, I had a primary pully on my mower desk shear off.  I
have a John Deere 12-hp lawn tractor that I use to cut my back yard …
my back field.  While out cutting, I suddenly heard a screech from
underneath and the blades stopped.  I quickly shut off the PTO to
see what was up, and there laying next to the front tire was a
pulley.  I recognized it as one from the mower deck, and so I
headed to my barn to investigate further.  Once I had the mower
deck off, it was obvious where the pulley came from, however there were
no signs of how it had been attached!  No threads, no key, no
nothing.  I called my neighbor Jerry Ellis and he came over to
look.  Jerry retired from the Utah Highway Dept. years ago, and is
a skilled mechanic and welder.  He too was puzzled on how the
pulley had been attached, but offered to weld it back on if I wanted.

I put the mower deck on my wheelbarrow and rolled it up the street to
his house, and then around the back to his shop.  There he had his
electric welder with it’s thick black cables.  Ten minutes later I
had a repaired mower deck … along with a quick education about
current technology in welding equipment.  (He had this killer
helmet that had an automatic lens to protect your eyes!  Something
like this!)

Within 30 minutes I had the mower deck re-installed on my tractor and
was cutting the back yard again.  Man … if I didn’t know someone
like Jerry, it probably would have been a long time to get this fixed
… and a lot of money.  Hmmm … I’ve always wanted to learn how
to weld …

i-Top and the Future of the Common Toy

Today
I bought an i-Top at Toys ‘R Us for $4.98 plus tax. Several of
the engineers that I work with had shown them to me. When I first
saw them, I was immediately
impressed … using a moving surface of a top, along with a strip of
light emitting diodes (LEDs) to turn the top into a digital
scoreboard. This week I was at the O’Reilly Emerging Technology
Conference in San Diego, and I saw a similar concept … on a cell
phone and on a pager. That’s what had me buy the i-Top. All
of these products are doing similar things … using some sort of
accelerometer to detect motion and then pulse the LEDs on and off at
the correct rate to make LED numbers, words, and images that seem to
float in the air. Or on the surface of a top.

There
are three really cool aspects of these toys … first, it is a
demonstration of the rapidly declining size and costs of the next
generation of sensors. Second, it is the presence of computing
power in the smallest of objects. Third … it is cheap.
The chips in this little top, for example, are able to detect both
time, and rotation … tracking each rotation of the top to know
exactly where and when to blink a particular LED to represent a
particular pixel in a letter or number. At the O’Reilly
conference it hit me that there are numerous places that these displays
will probably show up before long. I’m thinking about how to
capitalize on this stuff.

First, I started to think about how to create a version of this for
bicycle wheels. Imagine if your bicycle had patterns and messages
being displayed to others while you pedal down the street. Of
course for this to work, you would also have to have a way to track
“up” or “down” so that the messages were always readable and not upside
down. The next idea that hit me while writing this post is to put
these on car hubcaps. We already see the “spinners” that people
are putting on their cars, and the neon tubes underneath the car
body. It is only a matter of time before we’ll start to see these
new forms of art … these new expressions of emotion or message … on
a wide range of the surfaces around us.

In all, I am left impressed. At the innovation that can turn the
simplest of toys … a top … into so much more. In to a new
generation of toys that demonstrate just how inexpensive and powerful
our capabilities are growing. Go buy am i-Top … they are a fun
toy … and can make you think.

bigger version of each image.  Maybe next time I’ll make them
links …]

Radio Love/Hate Relationship

Yes … once again … my Radio Love/Hate Relationship.  There are
so many things tht I love about Radio, however I am here at the
O’Reilly Emerging Technology Conference in San Diego, and I have not
been able to blog all week.  Well … I can actually blog, but I
can’t upstream.

I’m not sure why, but the Radio FTP is not working, and fails with a
stupid, non-descriptive error telling me that some sub-table doesn’t
exist.  By now, I know that means that I can’t get to the FTP
server.  There are just too many little problems like this that
really bug me.

What is Funny/Sad is that I have had many people here at the conference
tell me about Radio … and their frustrations.  I have heard
person after person talking about how they left the application due to
the same sorts of issues.  It’s sad to see the momentum that this
product had, fall by the wayside in disrepair.  It still has more
advanced features than anything else that I can find … but I am
slowly beginning my search for something else.

I hope Userland can do something soon … I feel that time is running out for Radio.

Hanging in Hawai’i!

I haven’t actually been doing much reading, or posting, since last week
… being that I am on vacation in Hawai’i.  Yeah … every now
and then it’s nice to get away.  My parents have a time share for
two weeks every year, and this year they invited my family and I to
come and spend a week with them.  It’s always an amazing
experience … I truly appreciate their generosity.

We actually left last Friday and headed to their house in California,
and then flew over to the ‘Big Island” on Saturday.  It was fun
travelling with our two boys, and the younger one Sam (who is now over
two and a half years old) really enjoyed the flight.  We arrived
in Kona in the late afternoon, did some grocery shopping, and then got
to The Bay Club at
Waikoloa.  For anyone coming over to stay on this island, this is
a spectacular place.  The Bay Club is just behind the Hilton and Marriott … and the Hilton Waikoloa Village is an astounding resort to see.

We’ve had a blast driving a few minutes up the coast to play in the surf at Hapuna Beach State Park, we played a round of golf at the Kings Course here at Waikoloa, took a submarine ride down in Kona (down to 107 feet!), and hiked around Akaka Falls and the Waipi’o Valley.  Overall … we’ve been doing a lot!

Oh, and of course when I sat down in the The Bay Club condo that we are
staying in and opened my laptop … there was an open access point with
high-speed Internet.  Nice.

We leave tomorrow to head home … back to work.  I actually can’t wait.  I’m really enjoying my new job at Agilix, and can’t wait to dig in more!

Wells Fargo On-Line Banking

I have to admit that I am impressed – over and over again – by Wells
Fargo and their On-Line Banking. When my old bank – First
Interstate – was acquired, I immediately joined the new Wells Fargo
On-Line Banking program, and was impressed that I could manage my
personal and business accounts in a single application. The user
interface was easy to use, and I even was able to mix personal and
business on-line bill paying in an efficient manner.

A while back, they further impressed me when I had to locate some old
bank statements for one of my companies. Not only did they allow
my to locate them on-line, they provided them in Adobe .PDF format …
for NO charge! I was able to download and print the statements that I required to complete my taxes …

Today … more. When I happened to go and look at one of my
business accounts, I noticed they added a new link next to each check
that has cleared – View. Yes … when I click the link, it
provides the scanned image – front and back – of the check
itself! Oh yeah … and it appears to be free … no additional
charge!

I’m impressed with Wells Fargo On-Line Banking …

What the BLEEP do we know!?

On Friday night, my wife and I went to see a movie that was recommended by a friend. What the BLEEP do we know!?
is an amazing film that is like no other. Do not expect passive
entertainment, or the typical story lines. This is a film that
explores the reaches of science into quantum mechanics, and it’s
effects on our perception of reality. It begins to explore our
ability to “cause” in the universe, and how we shape our own reality by
our own behaviors.

The movie is receiving mixed reviews … and that is a good indicator
of controversy! Anyhow … I would recommend this movie to anyone
… and be prepared to think … not just watch!

Off the net for a bit …

We left on vacation on Monday … the 28th of June … and so I’ve been
off the net until today. It’s a little strange to not be checking
e-mail … or even keeping up on news. I found out that Marlon
Brando died
… what a bummer. He was an amazing actor … and
always will be. His movies will be around forever …

What was interesting about getting back on the net tonight, is how I
really take bandwidth for granted. I’m up here in West
Yellowstone, Montana
… and have wireless Internet because I stumbled
on it last year. While we stayed Monday and Tuesday in Lava Hot
Springs, Idaho
although it was fun to swim at the Olympic Swimming Complex … I didn’t have any access.

That does remind me of a cool little company that I stumbled on in Lava Hot Springs … 😉

Backyard Bear!

Last night I was on our back deck talking with my wife. We were
talking about where we might plant some sunflowers. As I was
looking around the backyard, I saw something in the corner of my eye,
that was just over the fence in the back corner of our property.

My first thought was that a big brown dog was slowly running up the mountain … and then I realized it was a big brown bear!

It turns out that my neighbor called the county sheriff when this bear
chose to walk through his back yard … then crossed the street …
then went though the yard next to mine … and then we watched it amble
up the mountain towards my Internet communications shed. The bear
quickly crossed over the top of the rise near the shed and we lost site
of it.

This is the first time that I have seen a bear that close to our house
…. it was fun and a good reminder about the presence of wildlife!

Snow storms and bald eagles
Last night the snow started to come down again. We have had several weeks of beautiful sunny weather (although cold) and it’s been great. The snow had started to leave, however with this storm we had another 4″-6″ at my house this morning … and the ground is well covered here at work.

The drive to work is always interesting in this type of weather. I drove here at ~30mph behind a group of cars that were being *extremely* cautious. What made the trip worthwhile was the section of Provo Canyon just before the Sundance Resort turn off. As I came out of the last turn, I was joined by a bald eagle that chose to fly above the Provo River, just off to the left of my truck. He glided along for almost a third of a mile or more, and then slowed and gently banked away.

I have seen a mating pair of these birds in my back yard for the last week … I wonder if this is the same one. They are incredible birds to watch. And even during a snow storm, they make their flight look so effortless. What a great way to start the morning!

Advances in model rocketry …
When I was growing up, I really enjoyed building and launching model rockets. There were several of us in my neighborhood that would buy and build the Estes Rockets that we bought at the local hobby shop. I remember that we all would look through the Estes catalogs at all of the new rockets, the multi-stage rockets, and the rockets that had payload capabilities.

One of the neat gadgets that you were able to buy from Estes was a camera that would take the 110 film cartidges. It would take a series of pictures as the rocket went through its flight. You would have to take the film to get developed after recovery. I remember that we all talked about getting one of these cameras.

This article brought back all of these memories as these guys have taken this to a whole new level. They are now putting a video camera in a model rocket, and sending live video feeds back to the ground as the flight takes place. Amazing. I went to their site, and enjoyed checking out the recorded videos that they had.

Pretty soon, with a set-up like this, you’ll be able to watch them launch their rockets live! All it will take is tying their existing video feeds to a streaming video server attached to the Internet. They might be able to use a 802.11 point-to-point wireless link to get from their “launchpad” to the Internet.

If I get motivated … maybe I’ll play around with some of this stuff … it might be fun!
